FACES FIRING SQUAD
TENSE SCENE AT LYONS. . •
LYONS, December 26.
Ahmed Ben Mohamed, a corporal in the sth Moroccan Sharpshooters, sentenced to death for murder, met his end with true Moslem fortitude when he faced the firing squad at icy dawn at Montessuy Fort here. Ahmed had run amuk, killed a white non-commissioned officer, wounded a black trooper, and attempted an assault on a woman. He attempted to blow out his own brains, but only succeeded in blinding himself. This morning he was shot in a square of troops of the Lyons garrison. He offered no resistance as he was strapped to the post. Refusing to have his sightless eyes blind-folded, he stood muttering Moslem prayers qs the bugle sounded. The firing squad advanced six paces, and a sharp order rang out. Twelve bullets riddled him, but in accordance with regulations, the ser-geant-major in charge of the firing squad gave the “coup de grace” point blank with his revolver. The troops marched past the body.—Reuter.
