FISH SALE REGULATIONS. (TO THE EDITOR.] Sir, —I understand that there is a new fish shop about to open in Greymouth and a, condition laid down by the Health Department, is that the shop must not have an open front, but. windows which prevent the entry of dust. I would like to know why it. is that the Health Officer does not insist on the men selling fish at the water-front having it under cover from flies and dust. If it is necessary for a shop to provide the regulations under the Act, surely it is equally necessary that the fish traders on Mawhera. Quay keep their stock under cover. —I am, etc., SCHNAPPER. (Interviewed in connection with the letter, Mr M. Bettel, Health Officer, stated that it was as necessary that the men selling fish on the water front should keep their wares under cover, as it was for the fish shops to do similarly. It was sometimes noticed that the fishermen displayed a bundle or two of fish, on the wharf, but he had always warned them against doing this. The fish must be under coyer from flies and I dust. Mr Bettel, in answer to a I query, stated in regard to men selling fish from the wharf, that they did not have any recognised hours of business, depending entirely on the success of the fishing boat. They could not, however, make a regular daily practice of establishing themselves on the wharf, and selling fish.j Providing that they complied with the Act, it was usual to allow such sales I —Ed. “Star.”)
