CROUPIER SEIZED BY BAILIFFS. [special to “stab.”] i .... i n.» CHRISTCHURCH, November 14. The Canterbury Jockey Club had a very good attendance for the concluding day of their Metropolitan meeting, and with a fair turnover, the meeting should show a fair profit with its restricted programme. facing was good throughout. A sensation was caused the G. G. Stead Cup, when Croupier was seized by the bailiffs. Both I. Tucker and I. Tilson were in jured and taken to hospital. Tucker appeared to have recovered sufficiently to take an interest in later proceedings, but was taken ill later and had to be hurried away. The weather was good and the going very hard. QUINOPAL WINS WELL. Quinopal was a slightly better favourite than the Landmark-Gourmet bracket in the Port Cooper Hurdles, iand so they finished. Lancer looked a better horse after his race on the ; first day, but liis chance was extinguished early, as he fell on the flat going out of the straight. Gourmet fell at Cutts’s, and Morena was in charge, i A faulty jump at the next fence lost I Morena his position. He made up his ! ground Before reaching the next fence, but another slow jump left Quinopal in ‘front from Landmark. They put a Ibreak on Morena round the turn, and (Quidipal won well, but Landmark just (lasted long enough to get second money from Morena by a head, Quin-

jopal has started over hurdles eight times for four wins, two seconds, and two thirds, and his sequence of placefilling might not be broken for a few starts yet. Morena will do better with experience. GRECIAN PRINCE WINS SEYMOUR Moorbird was a good favourite for, the Seymour Handicap, but drawing I No. 1 at the barrier was nothing to her advantage. She jumped out with the first bunch- but had to be kicked up to her work to keep her position behind Pakitere, Monastic and Grecian Prince. Grecian Prince had no difiiculty in winning by three lengths, while Jason’s Quest put in a long-dis-tance run to cut her stable companion out of second money. Pixie Gold, Bachelor’s Idol and Semper Paratus were next. R. McTavish rode Grecian Prince, his usual pilot having been injured when Lancer fell with him in the previous race. The winner did not pull himself to pieces as he usually does, and some more money’ is in view for him in better company.

CHIEF COOK IS GOOD. Chief Cook was backed . down to a short price in the Cressey Handicap, and at a big interval Al Jonson was the best backed, of the remainder. Waiwene and Lord Argosy showed the way to the turn for home , with Juniper, Chief Cook, Sharp Thorn and Al Jonson handy. Chief Cook took charge before reaching the distance, and won nicely by over a length from Juniper, with Al Jonson at a similar interval behind Juniper. Winsome Hind put in a good late run, and almost caught Al Jonson on the post, With Rin Tin Tin and Wise Choice heading the remainder. The winner was always going nicely and would have still won had the race been over a longer journey. Juniper should win a middle distance race later, and Winsome Hind will win in a smaller field.

ANOTHER FAVOURITE WINS. La Moderne was always favouirte for the Pioneer Handicap and finished up well under even money. She was always in front, and won comfortably. Michael Angelo was with her to the course proper, with Mister Quex, Silver Streak and Posy in line behind them. In an interesting finish for second money, Silver Streak got up by a length, with Michael Angelo about a neck behind Mister Quex. Fleeting Glance, Posy and Drumfire were in a bunch right on Michael Angelo’s quarters. The winner represented better class than her opponents. Night "Wind, a colt bj r Night Raid from St. Winnow, showed up at the end of a couple of furlongs. Like his stablemate, Azevedo, he has done no work, and with the easy time that he is to get during the next few months he might develop into a fair horse.

BEST RACE OF MEETING. From the spectator’s point of view the Metropolitan Handicap was the best race of the meeting. Spearful was favourite from Gay Crest, Jaloux, and Compris. Black Duke lost ground at the start and going out of the straight The Dove had charge from Spearful and Gay Crest, Topere, apd Admiral Drake, Jaloux and Ephialtes (in pairs), then Compris, Black Duke and Mount Boa at intervals. The Dove still had charge at the straight entrance, while Spearful and Gay Crest had been joined by Jaloux with Compris and Black Duke making up the leeway. At the distance Gay Crest, Jaloux, Spearful, Compris, and Ephialtes were in line and in a great finish Compris won by a head with necks separating Gay Crest, Jaloux, Spearful, Black Duke in that order. Compris was a much improved horse as compared with his Cup form and Black Duke though not improved much in condition, ran a much more generous race for J. W. Jennings. With a better beginning he would have been in the money. BRONZE EAGLE SETS RECORD. Bronze Eagle in the G. C. Stead Cup was favourite and easing up won by two lengths, in 2.2 4-5, lowering the N.Z. record for the distance by 2-5 sec. Croupier endeavoured to repeat his Trentham performance by putting a bi-eak on the other, but turning for home he was collared and finished in the minor placing four lengths behind Lady Pam. 'there is no doubt as to which is the best three-year-old in New Zealand at present, and it will be interesting to see how Ammon Ra fares with him in the Great Northern Derby.

PALACE COMING RIGHT. View Halloo was a warm favourite for the Stonyhurst Handicap with very liberal support also for Palace and La Ponpee. Azalia jumped out quiety and at the turn Gay Court, Gallant Fox, Palace, Gold Pit and View Halloo were right on her heels. The favourite was done with early and Palace just got to Azalia to win by a nose, with Gallant Fox a length away followed by Gay Court. The latter was in a rear position early, not seeming to appreciate the hard going. She put in a great run and will win at any time now on easier going. Palace stayed on to-day in the way he was expected to do, but failed earlier in the season. GREAT STAR SURPRISES.

After her good form earlier in the meeting Spoon was backed better than anything else in the Members’ Handicap. She ran a great race and just failed by a neck to concede 131 b to Great Star. Autopay and Kozan were left a couple of lengths after giving trouble, and turning for home Arrowmir had charge from Arrow Lad, Great Star, Spoon and Cimabue. At the distance Spoon and Great Star singled themselves out, the outsider finishing gamely under punishment, won by a short head. There was a length and a-half to Arrow Lad with Shatter and Cricket Bat next. Cricket Bat was badly placed at the turn having on.ly one horse behind him. His run, however, was not good enough.

CROUPIER TAKEN FROM CORRY. CHRISTCHURCH, November 14. An unusual incident occurred at Riccarton racecourse this afternoon, after the Stead Gold Cup. When the horses were led out of the bird-cage towards teh horse boxes, a man steppel out to Croupier (which a boy was leading), took hold of his head, removed the bridle, and put on another from his own pocket. The boy leading Croupier protested, and tried to keep his hold of ihe horse. Mr Cory arrived before the horse was led out of the gate. Mr. Corry requested the gatekeeper not to let the horse be taken out, but PoliceInspector Cameron directed the gatekeeper to let the man take the horse •out, as he had authority from the owners, He advised Mr. Corry not to in-

t terfere. Mr. Corry said: “I am the I owner.” “If that is the case,” said - Inspector Cameron, “You will be able ’to settle it elsewhere.” Mr. Corry re- • peated that he was the owner, and he was then jnformed that the Court ■would settle that. Later the horse was led away through the gate, followed by two policemen. | SHARING THE PRIZE MONEY-Forty-six owners shared in the prize money offered by the Canterbury Jockey Club, Dr W. C- Ring, of Auckland, being easily the most successful owner for Bronze Eagle, in winning the Derby and the G. G.
