The Arbitration Court’s award in the case of the freezing workers was filed to-day. It contains a few minor concessions in the form of exemptions from the special order of the Court affecting wages. But for these exemptions, it is virtually the same as the old award. It comes into force on November 23. Those who are being exempted from the cut of 10 per cent, are the slaughtermen’s assistants, who now are receiving 8/- per day. SWAMP DRAINAQE SCHEME. AUCKLAND, November 16. A scheme to lower the level of Lake Waikare, and <lrain Whangamarino dwamp and so add 30,000 acres to the productive area of the Auckland Province, was advanced, yesterday, when a representative gathering of settlers and others decided to ask. the Government to have engineers prepare a draft scheme. • The area is adjacent to the Hamil-ton-Auckland railway, fifty miles from Auckland. It is stated that the estitnated cost of the drainage is £BO,OOO. DRUNKEN DRIVER. 1 WELLINGTON, November 16. George Keepa Royg thirty-two, on Saturday evening, ignored a request by a police patrol on the Hutt Road, to stop his lorry, when he was driving at a speed alleged to be 50 miles an hour. At the intersection of Ngahauranga Gorge, he collided with a parked motor car, ripping the side out, and doing other damage. Roy’s lorry was overturned. He was taken to the hospital and was found to be undej the influence of liquor. As the Magistrate did not wish to - deprive him of the means of livelihood, he fined him £3O for being drunk when in charge of a lorry, and convicted and discharged him on a charge of dangerous driving, and ordered him to take out a prohibition order.
