GREYMOUTH UNEMPLOYED

HELP FOR CHRISTMAS With the object of raising a special fund, to provide Christmas “cheer” for the unemployed and their dependents at Greymouth, a committee is being organised by the Mayoress (Mrs J. W. Greenslade). Stating to-day that donations to the Mayor’s Fund would be welcomed, Mr. Greenslade pointed out that the number of men on the list is now 116, the total showing a considerable increase. The men arc practically all residents of the town, and are receiving relief work. Prior to the receipt of £145 14/3 from the Technical School, the Mayor’s Fund was practically exhausted, some £2OO having been expended in giving additional Work most deserving cases, during the past three months. “It can be well understood,”

said the Mayor, “that if we are to give a few extra days’ work to about 160 men, prior to the Christmas holidays, a considerable sum is required, and subscriptions towards this object will be gratefully received.” Speaking as Chairman of the Greymottth Unemployed Committee, Mr. Greenslade stated that special representations had been made to the Unemployment Board, with a view to securing a further allocation to provide relief work for unemployed Blackball miners, and it had also been requested that these men should be allowed to "work it out,” instead of making cash levy payments.
