GANGSTERS’ REVENGE

POLICE CHIEF SHOT DEAD NEW YORK, September 8. New Jersey gangsters who found Mr. John Cavanaugh, Chief of Police of Bernardsville, incorruptible, shot him dead early this morning on his doorstep. Gunmen set fire to a house opDosite his residence to attract his attention, and when he appeared in his doorway fired a volley and escaped. Mr. Cavanaugh had conducted a vigorous campaign against gangsters, and had driven most of the bootleggers and their “speakeasies” from his territory. All attempts to bribe him into “reasonableness” failed. He has, therefore, been “blotted out.” NOTE-BOOK STARTS NEW THEORY BERNARDSVILLE, (N.J.), Sept. 10. A little red note-book may reveal the secret of the mysterious death of Mr. Cavanaugh, the local chief of police, who was believed to have been shot dead from behind a rose bush by a hidden gunman. In the course of their investigations the police to-day discovered that Mr. Cavanaugh was well known as a “ladies’ man.” The note-book in question contains man” names of local society beauties, and also of a number of women of humbler circumstances. The theory now is that he was murdered by a jealous husband. —Renter.
