CHILLINGHAM CASTLE

CLOSED THROUGH TAXATION NEWCASTLE, September 16. Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, the residence of the Earl and Countess of Tankerville, is to be closed indefinitely, owing to heavy taxation; and there is a possibility that the famous herd of wild White cattle which have roamed the park for 700 years may disappear. Lord Tankerville, a skilled air pilot and engineer; w-ho recently succeeded his father, is at present in residence at the estate cottage, and the Dowager Countess is at the castle until she moves to Edinburgh, where she will live in the future. The present Earl said to-day that he had no idea what the death duties on the estate would be, but they would be verjj heavy. “About the last thing I want is to do away with the herd of wild cattle,” he added. Lord Tankerville takes a deep interest in the life of the villagers, and he 'hah* bneriect a • cinema at Wooler, where the local people are entertained to a show every week.
