MT. EGMONT RACE

NEW PLYMOUTH, October 24.
The round Mt. Egmont cycle race of 100 miles was a triumph for Christchurch riders, who filled first and second places, and gained the fastest time. The first three men home, in their order, were:—L. Fleming (Christchurch) 23 mins., F. A- Jennings (Christchurch) 22 mins., L. Taffery (New Plymouth) 27 mins. W. J. Lamberton, of Christchurch (scr.) who was seventh, gained fastest time in 4 hours 30 mins. 13 4-5 secs., or one minute two seconds slower than the record for the race, held by N. Bellringer, of New Plymouth. The three men finished practically in a bunch, with a number of others closely following. [ The hundred miles bitumen road encircling the mountain was in splendid order. The day was sunny but was punctuated with occasional showers. There was a strong south-west wind. A strong field of forty-nine riders started, drawn from all the provinces of New Zealand. The hundred miles championship goes to the winner. A. W. Ralston, Dunedin (lOinin), was fourth, and then followed J. G. Stack, Kaikoura (lOmin); D. Dowman, Taumarunui (15min); D. DowLamberton, Christchurch, R. Yardley, New Plymouth (scr.), C. Preen, Dunedin (lOmin), and H. G. Watson, Christchurch (scr). The New Zealand Championship goes to the winner of the fastest time. Yardley gained second fastest, and Watson third fastest. Watson has made the fastest time on a number of occasions in this race.
