[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] RAMEKA REPRIEVED. WELLINGTON, October 2. After taking into consideration all the facts, as well as the recommendation of the jury to mercy, the Executive Council decided this afternoon that the sentence of death passed on Rameka should be commuted to imprisonment for life. WATERSIDERS’ WAGESWELLINGTON, October 2. The Arbitration Court to-day heard an application by the Watersiders Federation for the exemption from the Court’s 10 per cent, cut general order, and judgment was reserved. TREE-FELLER KILLED. CHRISTCHURCH. October 3. Gordon Kingsbury. 34, married, of Culverden, died as the result of injuries while tree-felling. The tree slipped and crushed him against another.
OFFICE ROBBED. HAMILTON, October 1
Last night the office of the Northern Steam Ship Company and the cargo shed at Raglan were entered- A number of articles, some of a bulky nature, were removed from the office. An iron safe containing £5 in cash, some cheques and books, was removed bodily, as well as two overcoats. It. is thought that a lorry was used to transport the goods. A large tarpaulin, electric light cable, a case of motor spirit, a forty-five gallon drum, cases of hardware, kerosene, a tin of oil, and tools are missing. ffi
MAORI WOMAN’S DEATH STRATFORD, October 3
Ignorance on the part of . a Maori named Mara Nui, as to the law requiring him to notify the police of the sudden death of his wife, led to the police not being advised until 24 hours later, although word had been sent to relatives.
The woman was Hira Nui, who died suddenly at Ngatimaru on Wednesday. Rev. Mr. Hamilton called at the house on Thursday, and notified the police. At the inquest it was shown that deceased and her husband lived happily together, and the lack of notification was due to ignorance. After hearing the evidence the Coroner returned a verdict of death from natural causes.
COURT OF APPEAL. WELLINGTON, October 2.
The Appeal Court was this afternoon occupied in hearing the appeal of Mrs Dwan, against the judgment of the Chief Justice in the case in which judgment was given against her in favour of Dr Findlater and Henry Bingham, arising from an accident on the Hutt Road-
The accident occurred on November 17, when Dr Findlater’s car collided with one driven by a man named Wiggs, who subsequently died from injuries. Mrs Eva Dwan, who was also driving a car on the road, ran into Dr Findlater’s car, and at a subsequent Supreme Court action the- Chief Justice held the second accident would not have happened if Mrs Dwan had used proper care. He gave judgment for Dr Findlater for £471/9/6 and for Henry Bingham, a passenger in Findlater’s car, who was also injured, for £203. The appeal is now brought from these decisions.
The Court adjourned till Monday.
