Mrs C. E. Baxter returned to Greymouth yesterday by the express.

Dr A. B. Pearson, Bacteriologist at the Christchurch Hospital arrive,d in Greymouth yesterday, on an official visit.

Passengers returning to Greymouth yesterday afternoon included, Miss H. Cowell, and the Misses F. and M. Dando (Taylorville).

Mrs McLeod, who is much improved in health, will return to-day by car from Christchurch, accompanied by Mr J. McLeod. '

Mr W. E. Pring has been appointed Secretary to the'West Coast Agricultural, Pastoral and Industrial. Association, vice, Mr,H. Lane, who has resigned.

A Delhi cablegram stated that Sir Stuart Pears, Chief Commissioner of the North West Frontier Province fell down a ravine while touring in a mountainous district, and w'as killed. His'wife witnessed the tragedy.

' The death has occurred at p.uned.in of Miss Helen Williams, eldest daughter of the'-late’-Sir Joshua Williams. She was closely’ connected with philanthropic work. She was awarded for war service the 0.8. E. and the Queen of the Belgians medal.—-Press Assn; ' ■

The funeral of the late Mr Elsdon Best, this morning at Wellington, was attended by a large and representative gathering, including members of the Government and Legislative heads, Government departments, members of the Board of Maori Ethnological Research, Polynesian Society, Geographic Board, and also a number of members of the Maori race. A service at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral was conducted by the, Bishop of Aotearoa (Dr Bennett), the vicar of St. Paul’s (Canon James) and the vicar of Wadestown (Rev. Ashley Jones). ‘ The pall-bearers were Sir A. T. Ngata, Messrs Johannes, Anderson, P. J.’ Kelleher, A. Morris Jones, W. R. B. Oliver, W. J. Phillips, H. R. H. Balneavis, Dr. Marsden. . The committal service at the crematorium, Karori, was conducted by Canon James, and Rev. Ashley Jones.
