£4,000 FOR A CARPET
HIGH BIDDING AT CHRISTIE’S. A Persian carpet and a rug brought in a total of 5900 guineas at Christie’s, London, recently. Of this sum 3800 guineas was ..for a sixteenth-century carpet. Both were given several years ago by a Shah of Persia to a prince of the house of Schleswig-Hol-stein, and they now came to auction, under the title “a Continental Property.” . Lord Hastings had,sent from Melton, Constable Park, Norfolk, a Louiri XVI. marqueterie upright secretaire originally the property of Marie Antoinette, aud it now goes to the Marquis of Exeter at a cost of 1900 guineas. Another Hastings article: was 1 a Louis XV. clock, which realised 1000 guineas. The whole sale brought iri £15,000. Seven thousand pounds was paid for a collection of afrits and afraout made at Augsburg about 15&0 went for £1250.
