REEFTON NOTES

[ottr OWN correspondent.] REEFTON, August 6. A pianoforte recital -was given in the Convent School Room last evening, by Mr. Ronald Chamberlain, examiner for Trinity College, London. ■The Convent High School pupils together with all the examination entrants and a number of people interested in music, were the guests of the Sisters of Mercy, and an instructive evening was spent. Father Seymoui introduced Mr. Chamberlain to the gathering, and a programme of one and a-quarter hours music was presented by the visitor. Mr. Chamberlain played numbers from the old masters including Chopin, Bach, Schuman and Lizt together with a sprinkling of modern music featuring De Bussey and Saint Saens. Mr. Chamberlain also gave three pieces of his own composition, which were much enjoyed. Hearty applause greeted the player at the close of each number. Father Seymour thanked Mr. Chamberlain for his fine evening’s entertainment and hoped that tiie future would bring him to Reefton again. The little gathering had that evening been given the privilege of hearing some great music well plaved, and they had all greatly appreciated it. The speaker trusted that' it would be an encouragement to all the musical pupils present in their work in the future. Mr. Chamberlain briefly returned thanks. The following were the results ot the Trinity College musical examinaSenior Division: Zita Blackmore 83. Honours. m Intermediate Division: Kitty Turner 91. Honours. On Wednesday evening the parishoners of St. Stephen’s Church assembled in the school room to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs H. Walsleben and daughter. A very large gathering of Church members and friends attended, testifying to the esteem which was held by all for the guests of the evening. A short musical programme was enjoved, items being given by Mesdames Sharpe and Discacaiti and Miss Hutton and Messrs H. Cooper and J. D. Andrews. In making the presentation of a well filled envelope of notes, the Vicar (Rev. W. Bell) referred to the gap which was being made by their guest's departure. Mr Walsleben had been a tower of strength to church, having been vestryman, lay reader, and Sunday school superintendent for many years. The congregation much regretted the circumstances which compelled the departure of the two families, and the church could ill afford to lose such worthy members as Mr Walsleben and his family had been. He wished them goodbye and trusted they would all enjov good health, happiness and prosperity in their new home. Messrs E. W. Spencer, H. Cooper and W. S. Pratt also spoke and referred to the great work which Mr Walsleben had done, and Mrs Beresford thanked their chief guest for his 40 years of service in the Sunday school and his work 'amongst the children. Mr Walsleben on rising to reply was greeted with honours. He said that iiis feelings that evening were mixed. Regret at leaving so many fine friends and surprise at the praise which he had not deserved. What he had done in the church and in Sunday school was just plain duty and therefore was deserving of no great credit. He urged the parents to support the work of the Sunday school and concluded by thanking one and all for their kind remarks and wished them goodbye. Supper was served by the ladies and enjoyed by all. The Pronunciation of the Benediction dnd the singing of the National Anthem brought the evening to a close. Mr. H. Patchett, of the local Post and Telegraph staff has been transferred to Kaikoura and left by this morning’s Nelson car. During his residence here he has taken a great interest in Rugby football and his departure is a loss to that sport. Mrs. W. Campbell, of Christchurch, who has been visiting Mrs. F. Collis, at Reefton, returned home this morning accompanied by her son Mr. F. Campbell and his wife. Arrangements are being made for the celebration of the forthcoming anniversary services nt Wesley Church which is to take the form of a silver wedding, it being the 25th anniversary of the present church building.
