The fact that New Zealand consumed over 600,000 gallons of ice cream annually was mentioned by Mr. H. Turner, president of the Wholesale Ice Cream Manufacturers’ Association, at the fourth annual conference of the association in Wellington. Mr. Turner added that the principal manufacturers represented at the conference had capital interests in the ice cream industry aggregating about £500,000. Ice cream production absorbed the output of a huge herd of cows and in order to secure milk and cream of the best quality the prices paid for supplies were at least 25 per cent, higher than the ruling rates for butterfat. Addressing the Canterbury College Law Students’ Society, Dr. John Guthrie described the law courts as the last citadel of defence of the English language and the lawyers as its garrison. The courts, he said, demanded a dignified deportment on the part of the Profession and the use of dignified language, and he. expressed the hope that they would always discourage colloquialisms.
