RUSSIAN MATCHES
CONSIGNMENT FOR N.Z. [PER press association.] WELLINGTON, August 5. The steamer Matakana, which arrived in Wellington from London this week, included in her cargo a consignment of 300 cases of Russian matches. The consignees are the Russo Export Agency, of Sydney. The matches were shipped to vA ellington, having been consigned to order. There are fifty gross in each case, so that it means that there have been landed in Wellington 1,500,000 gross. It is stated that a similar shipment has been made at Auckland. A Wellington merchant stated that this new development will receive the serious consideration of the Government. It was, he said, the intention of one well-known firm to start the manufacture of safety matches in New Zealand, which would be a means of creating work for a number of unemployed. It was a possible likelihood that Russian competition might cause tho company referred to alter its views and not start a factory. It might be well, he added, for the Government to adjust the Customs duties to meet the situation.
