HOKITIKA NOTES
[OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, July 11. At the Borough Council meeting, last evening, it was reported that someone had entered a shed at the Borough Inspector’s residence and slashed the two tyres of the bicycle. The tyres were new. It was resolved to place the matter in the hands of the police. The Council alko resolved to replace the tyres. At the Borough Council meeting last night when an application from the Hokitika School Committee for assistance in aid of the dental clinic was under discussion, Cr. Armstrong (who is also Chairman of the School Committee), explaining the position, said the School Committee were faced with an expenditure of about £lOO per annum for the upkeep of the clinic and the only revenue received was by small grants made by some school committees amounting to about £3O in all, the balance to be made up by concerts and fairs etc. He referred to a statement made by Mr. AV. Searle at the AVestland County Council meeting on Tuesday last, which apparently had the effect of the Council refusing to make a grant although they had voted £5 the previous year. Schools in the Westland County had received treatment, but owing to the inability of the nurse to visit Hari Hari, he, and the Hokitika school committee had appealed to the Health Department to have a clinic officer stationed' in the South, and by their efforts, assisted by Mr. O’Brien, an officer was sent to Ross. For six months this district was without a nurse and the work fell behind, therefore an extra nurse was sent to cope with it and the nurses were doing splendid work. In answer to a question by a Councillor, Cr. Armstrong said the committee are authorised to make a small charge for treatment, but have no machinery for collecting it. The majority of the Councillors thought that parents should be prepared to pay for the dental treatment, and considered it was not the business of the Council to find funds for such objects and no action was taken.
