GREYMOUTH BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT. The following report will be presented at the annual meeting of the Greymouth Bowling Club to be held at the Club Pavilion on Monday evening next: — Your executive has much pleasure in submitting the report and financial statement for the season 1930-31, which, considering the heavy expenses throughout the year, show the finances of the Club to be in a sound state. Since the last annual meeting the Club through transfers from the district, has lost the services of several members, one of them Mr W. Graham, a member of the outgoing committee, who had served the Club splendidly both as a player and official. Members will join in wishing them all, every success in their new spheres. Seventeen new members were elected during the season. The official opening was fixed for Saturday, October 4, and was favoured with splendid weather conditions. The President (Mr D. McKay) extended a welcome to the ladies and visitors, and after Mrs McKay had rolled up the first bowl, the green was declared open for the season, and an enjoyable afternoon’s play indulged in by teams representing the President and VicePresident.

Weather conditions were variable throughout the season, but the usual competitions were completed, results being as under Championship singles: L. Mercer; championship pairs: L. Mercer and E. Moss; handicap singles: A. Steele; handicap pairs: F. Whibley and J. Leitch; leads and seconds singles: J. Bunt; Tate Cup: S. Shannon and J. Pearson; Lyttelton Cup, L. Mercer and D. Stevenson; progressive pairs: Labour Day, T. Brebner (skip); T. Hartley (lead). Christmas Day. L. Mercer; W. Beresford. Boxing Day, L. Mercer; J. Pearson. New Year’s Day, S. Shannon; A. Tabb. January 2, A. Carey; J. Bunt. During the season the caretaker, Mr J. Larking resigned and Mr J. Scott was appointed in his place, and has shown keen interest and knowledge in the upkeep of the green.

GRASS-GRUB DAMAGE. Considerable trouble has been experienced by the ravages of a type of grub which made its appearance in the early part of the season, and which again appeared during the topdressing operations at the end of the season. Several supposed remedies have been tried out, but have only been partially successful, most of them, whilst destroying many of the grubs, failing to deal with the eggs. Most of the processes tried, although harmless to the ordinary grass, have had a destroying effect on the special weed on the green. Inter-club games were played with Runanga-, Hokitika and Reefton, and the coveted Reynolds Buttons are now held by the Club. A visit was received from the Marlborough Centre, and after an enjoyable day, your representatives succeeded in winning all five games. The West Coast Tournament was held at Runanga, with overflow games on the Greymouth green, and proved most successful. Mr L. Mercer represented the Club in the Champion of Champions singles, and although unsuccessful in gaining the honours, put up a splendid fight, and worthiW upheld the reputation of the Club. The rink led by Mr F. Whibley acted as runners up. to the winners, Runanga, whose success was most popular. Our pairs representatives, a!r though unsuccessful, put up some very good games. Your club was also represented at the Nelson tournament by several rinks, which acquitted themselves creditably. In conclusion, on behalf of the Club, we wish to tender our sincere thanks to the ladies for their valuable assistance throughout the season; to the Press, and to all who have assisted in promoting the interests of the Club, and trust that the coming season will be most successful, and that the teim of the incoming executive will be happy and prosperous.
