TRANSPORT LICENSING
FARMERS’ UNION PROPOSALS [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, July 10. Opposition to some of the provisions of the Transport Licensing Bill now before Parliament, was expressed at the Farmers’ Union Conference today, the following recommendations were made to the Conference by the Transport Committee: — (1) That licensing districts should be the present highways districts; (2) that members appointed to district licensing boards should be on the recommendation of the district highway councils; (3) that clause 47 (1) relating to licenses of vehicles carrying goods should be more clearly defined so as to protect the interests of farming community; (4) that in all cases where licenses are to be granted or renewed for definite routes or services, tenders should be called for such services. It was decided to accept the committee’s report as an interim report, and refei- the Transport Bill to the executive and Transport Committee with a view to tendering evidence before the special committee set up by the House to consider the Bill.
