UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
NEW BILL PASSED BY HOUSE.
[FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, July 10.
The Unemployment Amendment Bill was put through the remaining stages, and passed, with amendments, including one granting exemption from wages tax to relief workers un der the No. 5 Schemes, whose only remuneration was that received from the Unemployment Board. The House rose at 5.55 p.m. till Tuesday.
SHARING THE WORK.
HAMILTON, July 10
A spirit of self-sacrifice in a common cause w r as shown by a mass meeting of Hamilton unemployed at the Winter Show Hall, when it was decided to spread the burden of reduced work over the whole membership instead of casting it on the shoulders of the single men only. The Government grant to Hamilton under the No. 5 Scheme has been reduced by £66 this week. This has necessitated the cutting down of work, and means either giving the single men two days less employment, or the whole of the relief workers, both married and single, accepting one half-day less. After considering the alternative proposals, the meeting unanimously decided to spread the burden over all.
