FARMERS’ UNION

DOMINION CONFERENCE.

[PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON, July 8

At the Farmers’ Union conference, to-day, a South Taranaki remit, suggesting that farmers’ lorries should be exempt from heavy traffic fees, providing they were used for carting farmers’ own produce to the nearest railway, was discussed. Opposition was raised on various grounds, and on a vote being taken, the remit was lost. A remit, that enquiries should be made as to whether it was not possible for British material to be used for frozen meat-carcase covers, led to .the Secretary stating that the extra cost would be £lO,OOO to £12,000 per year, and that the Meat Committee had come to the conclusion that the extra cost would not be justified. He had been further informed that a number of works used English stockingette, because the extra cost was rather less than usual,’ and it was hoped that the position -would resolve itself into preference for British material. The matter lapsed. A remit was affirmed, that Power Boards be compelled to accept liability for loss of life and damage to stock on property, due to the existence of power lines during and after their erection; also another remit, that the Power Boards Act be amended, to provide that on questions of loans, the franchise be the same as is provided in the Counties Act. WOMEN’S DIVISION. WELLINGTON, July 8. The women’s division of the Farmers’ Union in conference to-day, decided that a wool campaign be carried out throughout the Dominion. Plans were made accordingly. The sixpenny levy for the travelling expenses of members was abolished. A remit that moneys given to branches for community work, where not specially specified for local branches, should be passed into the funds of the Dominion Executive, was carried.

Mrs C. C. Jackson whs again elected president. Dominion vice-presidents: Mesdanies Walker, Wilson and Wickham (North Island) and Mesdames Drake, Niederer and Hall (South Island). Dominion treasurer: M ; rs Simpson.
