LEAGUE FOOTBALL

COMMITTEE’S MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the West Coast Rugby League was held last evening. Those present were Messrs A. H. McKane (President), W. Barlow, A. Fielding (referees’ delegate), R. Harrington (Treasurer) and J. Anderson (Secretary). Apologies were received from Messrs E. Smith, E. Hogg, \v Ryan and A. Anisy. The Secretary reported that no explanation of their conduct had as yet been received from A. Currie and Tallentyre regarding their playing a senior game for Blackball at the close of last season when chosen to play for the Southern Division Junior representative team. —It was decided to hold the matter over until a full meeting. /Four clubs wrote nominating Mr A. Kyle for the vacant position on the Management Committee. The Secretary stated that he had also been nominated verbally by other clubs. No other nominations were received. On the motion of Mi’ W. Barlow Mi’ Kyle was formally declared elected. A few minutes after Mr Barlow’s motion, Mr R. Williams, Secretary of the Marist Club waited on the meeting and nominated Mr L. Jackson but was informed that he was too late. The Borough Council wrote advising the League of the allocation of dates

for the Recreation Ground with the

proviso that the dates were only to hold good while the ground was available as it was possible that in two or three months’* time the ground might be closed f*'*’ purposes of improve ment.- —Mr McKane stated that he understood that Rugby would be without a ground on May 9, on which date lower-grade League matches would be played on the Recreation Ground, and he moved that the Junior Advisor;/ Board be approached to see whether some arrangement could be made so that both codes could use the ground. —Carried. The Runanga Club wrote asking for the reclassification from senior to junior of J. Hardy and J. Marshall. — Granted. Mr C. J. Dewar, referee of the Mar-ist-Runanga senior match at Wingham Park last Sunday wrote stating

that at times, the game was inclined to be out of hand, the play being too willing, and feeling being strained between certain of the players. In consequence it had been found necessary during the game to order off Newton, a Runanga forward for using his fe>t unnecessarily when tackled, to the danger of other players, and Calder of the Marist team for using bad language in the hearing of spectators. Calder had been reported by a touch judge, and on being spoken to by the referee had used bad language again. Mr -Dewar’s letter also requested that more satisfactory arrangements should be made to prevent spectators encroaching on the playing area.

Mr McKane: Has either of these players been before the committee before.

Mr 1 Anderson: No. Mr McKane then moved that the usual letter of caution be sent to Newton and to Calder.

Mi* A. Fielding, one of the touch judges st the game, stated that after Newton had been ordered off, he (Mr Fielding) had found it necessary to speak to him for causing a disturbance on the line, and to ask him to go off the field on which he was encroaching. The player had got a bit out of hand, and he thought that the matter should be mentioned at the meeting.* One of the remarks that Newton had used when Mr Fielding had threatened to report him was “Go on, then, report me. I’ll be playing again next Sunday.” It was decided that reference to Mr Fielding’s complaint be embodied in the cautioning letter to Newton. New registrations were received as follows from the Kohinoor Club: M. Smith, T. Dowling, E. Dowling and L. Harrington. Mr McKane stated that a complaint

had been received from a resident living near Wingham Park that his turnip fields had been raided by a *trowd of boys.—lt was decided that the complaint be received and that the police be notified of the matter. .Ou the motion of Mr Harrington it was decided that, on account of the few teams entered, the senior competition should comprise three rounds instead of two.

It was also decided that all applications for reclassification of players during the current season be in the hands of the secretary not later than June 3. It was decided that the clubs be requested to send in nominations for selectors, three for the senior grade and one foi’ each division of the junior grade.

Mr R. Harrington stated that as yet no rules had been drafted to govern the award of the Anisy Shield which

had been donated by Messrs A. and J. Anisy for senior inter-provincial games.—lt was decided to hold the mattei’ over until the next meeting when Mr A. Anisy will be present. The secretary was instructed to write to the New Zealand Council with regard to the appointment of a manager for the South Island League team, pointing out that both Canterbury and Otago had provided managers and it was now the West Coast’s turn.

Accounts amounting to £9 6/5 were passed for payment. The Finance Committee reported that it had discussed at some length ways and means of the Centre assisting to pay the expenses of unemployed players and submitted the following recommendation: That 25 per cent of the gross-gate takings he sei aside for the purpose of a relief fund and that the ordinary percentage set aside to form a trust account for clubs be deducted from the remaining 75 per cent, less advertising.—lt was

decided to hold over the discussion cl the recommendation until next meet ing. WEEK-END FIXTURES. The following fixtures were arranged for the week-end. Senior: Marist v.
