MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB The committee of the newly-formed Grey Miniature Rifle Club held its first meeting in the Drill Hall last evening; present: Messrs S. Sharman (chairman), W. Prendergast, G. Richardson, T. Garth, J. Behan, N. W. Wilkie, W. Hamilton, I. Bennington, and M.’Garth (secretary). The action of Mr. Sharman in purchasing gear from the old Railway Club was endorsed. It was decided to forward letters of thanks to Messrs E. R. Moss, J. McLean and J. Edmonds (Christchurch) for donations to the club. Mr. Edmonds also promised to donate a trophy. The secretary was instructed to invite all Greymouth firms io supply quotes for ammunition. It was decided to invite the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Greenslade) to fire the first'shot at the Club’s opening shoot. A match will be fired between teams representing the president and vicepresident. The following officials were appointed for the shoot: 'Targets. Messrs G. Richardson and T. Garth, Mounds: J. Beban and C. Richardson; Rifles: • W. Hamilton and W. Prendergast; Range Officer: S. Sharman; Targets Checkers: M. Garth, N. W. Wilkie, and I. Bennington; Ammunition: M. Garth.
The attention of members was drawn .to the rules, requiring that no rifles be taken from the mounds, except by the custodian, and that no targets be taken away until checked by the secretary. MAWHERAITI RIFLE CLUB The Mawheraiti Rifle Club is being revived after a lapse of two years, several young men in the district stating their willingness to join up. The thanks of the Club are due.to Mr.-J. Walters, who has been the mainstay of the Club in the past , being handicapper and secretary and is still taking an interest in the club. The pastpresident, Mr. N. McVicar has been re-appointed to that position, the other officers to be elected at the next meet-, ing when the balance sheet, which shows that the club is in a sound financial, position, will also be presented. Mr AH. Hubbard of Reefton, has presented a trophy to be allocated as the Club sees fit and the Club has also the Walters Cup which is to be shot for each year. The range is conveniently situated being only a few chains from the main Grey-Reefton road and a working bee has been busy cleaning up the range and renewing the targets.
HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL [OUR own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, May 2. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. The Town Clerk read the declaration. re. election of Mayor and Councillors. Present: The May-<T (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, A. C. Armstrong, Jas. King, G. Heinz, D. J. Evans. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Teiclielmann and D. P. Stuart. Messrs Arthur and. Huia Appleton wrote asking whether the Council could grant better-lease for part Municipal Reserve 466,, Block 45, Hokitika. —Received-. The Clerk said the section referred to was a cricket reserve. The Mayor moved that proper action be taken to have the said reserve converted into an endowment reserve so as to give a better lease to the tenants. Seconded by Cr. Heenan and carried. Mrs Janie Butler applied to be granted 21 years lease of Lot 1 part Municipal Reserve 801.—Granted. E. Berendt, Davie Street, wrote asking that footpath between residence and Hampden Street be put in order, as it is very much overgrown.—To be attended to. W. Shadbqlt, Fitzlierbert Street, apl- - for street crossing at residence, —Granted; applicant to pay cogt. Secretary Westland Hospial' Board forwarded statement of receipt and expenditure for year ending March 31, 1931, and also statement of levy on contributing Local Bodies which was struck on April 27, .1931. The Hokitika Borough Council is levied £750 Q/2 in nine payments of £B3 7/9. The first levy is payable when demand is made. H. H. Williams, Fitzlierbert Street, wrote re removal of fence at Section 157, Revell Street (F. Bock owner). -
Referred to the Mayor. Mi*. A. S. King, Brittan Street, applied for road and drainage to Section 1299-1300 Park Street, near Livingstone Street.—No action taken. Miss A. Stapleton, Secretary Ladies’ Hockey Club, applied for permission to use Cass Square for hockey field during the coming season. —Granted. C. S. Sparkes, sanitary contractor, offered to carry out the sanitary contract for a period of three years from
the date of expiry of the present contract for an annual subsidy of £396 payable at the rate of £33 at the end of each month. —Accepted. Westland County Council wrote ask-
ing in regard to the amended motor driving regulations and Clause 6 (a) of Regulation 3 whether Council desire to continue former arrangement
in regard to the issue of licenses.— Resolved that present arrangement be continued.
E. W. Heenan, on behalf of the Rugby sub-Union applied for use of the Square and sole use of the ’Square on June 3, for seven-a-side tournament. —Granted. •
The Treasurer reported , receipts amounting to £251 2/7; expenditure £6Bl 4/8; debit balance £958 0/10. Accounts amounting to the sum of £579 3/2 were passed for payment. It was resolved that the 'subsidy payable to the public library be £lOO —a reduction o* £2O. Cr. Evans suggested that the drain to the sea on the North Belt should be boxed as the sides are slipping in. The matter was left with Cr. Heenan to procure timber. Cr. Evans stated that £25 was available for employing returned soldiers, and asked that .it be subsidised by the Borough Council. —Resolved that, subsidy be paid and the amount spent in making pipes.
On the question of forming a committee to control the Lake Kanieri Park or scenic reserve, on the motion of Cr Heinz it was resolved that the Mayor and Crs. Evans and Teichelmann represent the Council on the committee.
On the motion of Cr. King it was resolved to hold Council meetings monthly during the winter. An application from P. M. Shannon for separate water connection was granted, subject to the applicant paying £l. It was resolved that the wages for casual hands be 1.4/- per day. Cr Evans was elected Deputy Mayor.
