TENNIS
ENGLAND’S NEW HOPE. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, April 12. In the final, Austin beat Perry 3-6, 4-6, 8-6, 6-1, and 7-5. 1 Wallis Myers, the tennis critic, describing the final of the Davis Cup trial, expresses the opinion that Perry is England’s greatest tennis star. He says: “This ex-world champion at pingpong has found a way to exploit its strokes on the tennis court, and promises to revolutionise lawn tennis. He discards defensive methods, and hits the ball so early that his drives have a time-saving virtue of half volleys. He has speed of foot and hand, and at his best, he is more daring than Cochet. He occasionally made Tilden’s type of game seem comparatively dull and stereotyped. He would have defeated Austin on a faster surface. I believe Perry and Austin should be equal to bringing back the Davis Cup to England.”

INANGAHUA v. REEFTON A team from the Reefton Tennis Club travelled to Inangahua Junction over the week-end and played the local club. The games were keenly contested and provided an exciting finish, both teams having won five sets and fortyfive games when there was billy one set left to be played. The Reefton player, Miss Alice Patterson, beat Miss Marr in this set, and so enabled the visitors to scrape home with a hard-earned victory. The weather was ideal and many Reeftonites took advantage of the occasion to motor out to see the play. During the afternoon six motor-cars filled with passengers arrived from Reefton, also several from other parts, and all were hospitably entertained at afternoon tea by the Inangahua Junction Club.
