ALLEGED DOPING. CEVANTES A VICTIM. MELBOURNE, March 18. For some time it has been suspected in racing circles there has been one or more persons engaged in the practice of doping racehorses. A few months ago Wise' Force was tampered with, and another case was that of Kambull.

That the doping is still going on was evident when Cervantes arrived at Kyneton to-day to fulfil his engagement in the Cup.. The Lanins gelding had shown good form -in his recent races, and he was stronlgy fancied to-day. His trainer, T. O’Dea, noticed that the horse was not in his usual condition, and an examination revealed that he was suffering acutely. O’Dea was certain that lie had. been doped. The horse was in such a bad wgy that he was scratched for the Chp. The belief that Cevantes was temporarily blind was proved when the horse walked into a tree guard, and also collided with a post near the stall.. O’Dea waved his handkerchief in front of the, horse’s eyes, but Ceyantes did not move. He was examined by tlie club’s veterinary surgeon, who stated that there was little doubt that the horse had been tampered with. There is doubt whether he will recover.

The trainer considered that the doping had taken place at Newmarket, where the horse was entrained. There his attendant had to leave Cevantes in order to sign a document.
