There whs a large attendance of members and friends at St. Stephen’s Hall on Wednesday evening when they met to hear Miss Stops, Dominion Organiser, give a talk on “The Aims and Objects of Women’s Institutes.” All present showed a keen interest in Miss Stops’ work, and she had on view some beautiful examples of needlework etc.
The annual report and balance sheet were read, and this showed that the Women’s Institute in Reefton has progressed favourably. Although only formed last July, beginning with eleven members, the Institute work is becoming more widely known, and it now has a total of 45 members; 20 of whom were enrolled on Wednesday evening.
All officers were re-elected for the coming year. Mrs Watson, President, was appointed for the coming year to attend the annual meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Federation, to be held in Geraldine next month. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Stops for her interesting and helpful suggestions, after which the ladies served supper. During the year, demonstrations .were given in skin-curing, wool rug making, paper flowers, bead flowers, and passe partout framing. In this year’s programme, the committee hope to include many more interesting crafts. A painful accident befell Margaret Hawthorn, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hawthorn, while playing at school at the giant stride. The child fell, breaking her wrist. Dr Wicken attended to the injury. , Mr E. Riley, who has been seriously ill in the Reefton Hospital, is reported to be much better.
