N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

DUNEDIN, February 28.

The New Zealand athletic championships were continued to-day in most unfavourable weather. Heavy rain showers, which commenced in the morning, continued throughout the day. The track was sodden, and the performances were noticeably affected. Features of the meeting were the 100 yards championship, which Simpson (America) won in 10 l-ssecs, and the putting the shot, in which Harlow P. Rothert smashed the New Zealand record with a throw of 4Sft 9ins., which was 81 inches better than the New Zealand record. Rothert also won the javelin throw with a cast of 171 feet 51 inches, which was well under the throw of the present champion, S. A. Lay. Rose won the- three mile flat in great style, and it was one of the most interesting races of the kind seen for many years, being won by only one and a-half yards. Results: — PPutting the Shot Championship.— Rothert 46ft 9ins, 1; Munro 41ft 4ins, 2; Stewart and French 36ft Ulins; Morgan 33ft Ilins. Ladies’ 100yds Championship: — Miss T. Kench (Wellington) 1; Miss R. Grant (Otago) 2; Miss B. Stephens (Wanganui-Taranaki) 3. Time 11 4-5 secs.

440yds Championship, final: —Don Evans 1; Blackmore 2; Charley (another Canterbury runner) 3. Time 52secs.
