WELLINGTON, March 1

Owing to the destruction of records in the Labour Bureau at Auckland in consequence of a recent disturbance caused by some of the unemployed, and also to the loss of the records at Napier, as the result of the earthquake there, it has not been possible to furnish during the past couple of weeks returns showing the unemployment position throughout the Dominion. This statement was made by the Minister of Labour on Saturday, when explaining why there had been a fortnight’s interval since the last announced unemployment registrations.

Tho Minister stated that the returns for the week ended February 23 had now been compiled, and they showed that total applications then pending on the books of the Department were 27,662.

The following are the returns of the unemployed in the main centres for the week under review: —

Men with Dependents: Auckland 4166, Wellington 2001, Christchurch 2124, Dunedin 992, Invercargill 316. Men without Dependents: Auckland 3000, Wellington 1750, Christchurch 1331, Dunedin 931, Invercargill 250.

Totals: Auckland 7166, Wellington 3751, Christchurch 3455, Dunedin 1923, Invercargill 566. Grand total 27,668. The new, or renewed, applications during the week were 8466. Of 3474 were from, persons who had not previously registered' during the past 12 months. Of the 27,662, there were 10.978 who qualified, and were again placed in employment under the. Unemployment Board’s fechemes Nos. 2 and 5.

Excluding the men employed under these schemes, the following is a summary of the position:—Auckland 5679. Wellington 1662, Christchurch 1142, Dunedin 502, Invercargill 189, other towns in New Zealand 7510; total 16,684. Of these, the majority have not yet qualified under the conditions relating to employment under the Board’s schemes.
