HOSPITAL LEVY REDUCED. DUNEDIN, February 27.
In adopting a recommendation from the Social Committee, the Otago Hospital Board sanctioned what amounts to a twenty per cent, reduction in the hospital levy for the year. The committee’s recommendation was that no levy be made for capital expenditure, which means a reduction of £lO,OOO on local authorities. This is merely a temporary concession during the depression. DEER MENACE. HASTINGS, February 27. After investigating a report recently made by Mr F. E. Smith, of Hastings, that deer were causing grave damage to the bush on the shore of Lake Waikaremoana, the Department of Internal Affairs has informed Mr Smith that the area specified has been found to -have been declared a sanctuary in 1921. The forest consists of an area on the ranges facing the southern reaches of Lake Wairaumoana, which is part of the stretch of waters which as a whole forms Lake Waikaremoana. The Department states that, under the regulations governing sanctuaries, the use of firearms is forbidden, but points out that, although it is obviously not desirable that Indiscriminate destruction should be permitted in a sanctuary, the Department is now considering the matter of allowing reputable and approved people to shoot deer in the area referred to.
