ENDURANCE SWIMMING
BIG CONTEST AT MANLY. From the deliberations of> the Manly Council, Sydney, may emerge official proposals for an international endurance swimming contest early next year. The promoter of the scheme, Mr George Barnes, has already riiade tentative arrangements for the construction of a shark-proof swimming pool on the harbour side of Manly. Steel torpedo nets are to lie ■ used to enclose the swimming area, and a stadium grandstand, to seat 3500 will be erected on an ideally situated wharf overlooking the length of the course. The contest is fixed io begin on January 24, and will be the first endurance swim to be held in Australia. International swimmers have been invited to compete in the main event, which is expected . to attract not only the cream of Australia’s distance swimmers, but those of New Zealand, Tasmania, and others from much farther afield. Conditions will be the same as those governing similar events in America and England. . - A special prize is announced for anyorie bettering tile world’s record endurance swimming time of 69 hours.
