MINISTERS RETURN HOME
CANADIAN’S IMPRESSIONS. (BY CABLE—PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Received December 2 at 11 a.m.) OTTAWA, December 1. • Back from the Empire Conference, the Trade Minister, Mr Stevens stated that Mr Maloney would arrive here at the middle of the month to negotiate fox- a new -Australian treaty. The effect of the new pact, would be for Canada to buy more from Australia, thus removing the four to one advantage held by Canada. The Canadians were now buying many articles from foreign countries that could be supplied by Australia. The same applied to New Zealand, but negotiations with that country were more difficult, because of higher duty on butter. The. Russian five-year plan was succeeding all along the line, said Mr Stevens, and the Canadians were doing their country a disservice by pretending otherwise. The Soviet would soon be a live competition with Canada. The failure of tfxe Imperial Conference was due to Britain’s disturbed political situation. It would have been bettex- to have held an election in Britain first, to produce definite proposals fox- the Conference. More protection would greatly aitl Britain.
MR HERTZOG SATISFIED. CAPE TOWN, December 1. The Premier (Mr Hertzog) was given a municipal welcome. He said he had every right to assert his mission if the Imperial Conference had borne fruit. He would liked to .have got more facilities for disposing of South Africa’s products in Britain, but knowing the policy of the British Government, South Africa’s expectations had been met, though not her hopes. He expected progress at the Ottawa Conference.
