“SHORTS” FOR MEN
’VARSITY GIRLS DISAPPROVE. University co-eds of Toronto consider “shorts” tor men out of order, though they are not averse to the male students wearing them in the evening, providing they are of “mauve suk. A controversy over “snorts has been raging about the University of Toronto campus. The boys consider the dress reform bound to come, and are all foi it. but the girls disapprove. A small group of Trinity College seniors inaugurated the latest student fashion when they stalked into the college dining room wearing trousers that very much exposed the knees. Dr. G. . Kingston, dean of the residence, ordered them out, and. amid a chorus ot jeers they withdrew, to return a few minutes later in more orthodox garb. Reporters of “The ’Varsity, the student daily, secured a series ot interviews on the question from men and women students respectively. The chief objection of the women to the “shorts’ ’appeared to be that they, did not appreciate the “knobby knees exposed by this stylo of garment. Most admitted that men were in need of dress reform, but shorts and ugly knees” they abhorred. Several were original in their gestions. One favoured “shorts" for street wear only, while another iavouied them for evening, but in mauve silk. Most of the men were enthusiastically for the shorts and believed that the thin edge of the wedge for college dress reform, had been inserted by the Trinity College incident.
