Two clerks in the Ministry of Agriculture of Northern Ireland are to divide the first prize of £204,764, as the result of their holding the winning .ticket in the Irish sweep on the Manchester November Handicap.
New turf problems arise from the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes. At least two of the ticket-holders for runners were threatened that, unless they pay respectively £BOO and £5OO, the horses would not start. Inis form of blackmail is facilitated by the publication of the names and addresses of the drawers of the horses.
PRIZE TICKET GOES BEGGING.
LONDON, November 23.
A Belfast civil servant, who had been unable to sell his last book of tickets, shared it with a. local barman and drew first prize £204,764 in the Irish Sweep, but as they had sold half tho ticket for £3500, their net win was £102,382.
Tho newspapers point out that the Irish Sweep cost almost as much in expenses as the £131,724 it provided for Irish hospitals. Correspondents and leader-writers are increasingly insisting oh the sanctioning of sweeps in Britain, in aid of hospitals A CANADIAN SUCCESS.
VANCOUVER, November 22.
Alan Dawe, 35 years of age, born in Vancouver, received the big surprise of his lifetime on Saturday when he received a cablegram informing him that he had won 409,500 dollars, the second prize in the Irish Free State Sweepstake. Dawe is the proprietor of an automobile garage.
Ho has announced that he will immediately clear off his mortgage, and will then deed his business over to liis two youthful employees. Dawe is planning for a long holiday trip for himself.
