ARBITRATION COURT
# HINT OF LOWER WAGES
[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, November 22. Athough the Court of Arbitration increased the wages in the Award of the Marlborough building trades industrial dispute, it made it clear that the wages fixed by the last award in 1924, were below those at present in force in other parts of New Zealand, and it pointed out there appeared to be no reason why the minimum rates of wages in Marlborough should be less than those paid workers in building trades in other districts. At the same time it issued a statement that it might be necessary for the Court in future to fix other standards of wages than those now generally prevailing.
MUSICIANS’ AWARD A new Dominion Musicians’ Award has been filed in the Court of Arbitration. In a memorandum, Justice Frazer states a number of departures from the provisions of the award were discussed at the hearing, but owing to the form of claims and the counterproposals, the Court had not the jurisdiction to deal with them, and the conference between the parties proved abortive. The Court has therefore decided to make a short term award which practically carries on the former award for another year. It is open to the parties at any time to agree to refer to the Court any proposed amendments to or extensions of the aware} to meet the changing conditions.
