BLACKBALL NOTES

[OUB OWN COBRESPONDENT.] Mrs J. Campbell left for Christchurch on Tuesday on a holiday visit. Mr W. G. Brunton, stationmaster, who has been on annual leave, returned from Timaru yesterday. The site for the new school has been cleared and carpenters have commenced on the work but it is not expected to have the school" finished until about next March. Mr E. Dumpleton left on Tuesday for Christchurch. Several unsuccessful attempts have been made previously to make a tennis court In the town, but it is now fully hoped that it will not be long before we have one. A strong working bee which has been organised by the Oddfellows’ Lodge will commence on the work at th® week-end. Mrs .G. Clark and Miss R. Clark left’ for Christchurch yesterday on a short holiday. Messrs W. McGregor and W. Kinsella are attending the Racing Carni val ati Christchurch. Mr A. Johnson is relieving Mr A. Frame, railway Clerk, who is on annual leave.

On Tuesday afternoon a number of Blackball Ladies met Mrs Oliver and Mrs. Meade, voluntary organisers for the Women’s Institute, to hear about the work of the Institute. A display of typical handwork from other branches was shown and much interest was evinced in it. It was decided to form a branch of the Institute in Blackball and the following .Committee was elected: —President, Mrs F. O. Bennett; Secretary, Mrs J. Hutchinson; Treasurer, Mrs H. Ritchie; Committee, Mesdames J Park, A. M. Laing, and J. Bishop. Meetings are to be held monthly on the last Friday of the month, and all ladies interested are invited to join. A pleasant social evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs G. Clark on Saturday on the occasion of the twenty-first birthday of their daughter Rita. Some forty guests sat down to an attractive supper and during the evening, which was spent in competitions and singing, the guest of honour was the recipient of many presents and congratulations.
