GANGSTERS RAID RAIDERS

PROHIBITION’ AGENT KILLED.

NEW YORK, September 20.

Twelve gangster, members of the New Jersey Beer Racket, boldly attacked seven Prohibition agents in the act of raiding the Rising Sun Brewery at Elizabeth, New Jersey, last evening. They killed one, disarmed others, and fled after releasing eight prisoners the agents had corralled in the boiler-room.

The daring of the attack has convinced the Government authorities that the entrenched New Jersey beer industry has determined to protect its illicit trade at any cost against a major offensive by the Government. Two Prohibition agents, who came from Philadelphia and acted independently of the local Enforcement officers, expected to surprise the brewery employees. but it was evident that their plans were known to the gangsters in advance.

When they finally reached the brewery all was quiet, and they proceeded to round up employees scattered throughout the building. They were searching the captives when the gangsters burst in and took them by surprise.
