DRINK LEADS TO DIVORCE
“TUI CLUB” ORGIES A WIFE’S REVELATIONS [PKB PBESB ASSOOIATIOIf.] AUCKLAND, November 14. A remarkable story of the operations of a drinking club in the no-license district of Taumarunui, was told in the Divorce Court by Olive May Haigh, who petitioned for a divorce from Percy Haigh, on the grounds of habitual drunkenness and cruelty. She said that -while in Taumarunui her home was made the headquarters of the “Tui Club,” whose members used to order five or ten gallons of beer every week-end, and gather round the keg until all were more or less drunk. If anyone were still sober, he would get a bottle of whisky paying 25/-.
His Honor: That was after drinking a barrel of beer? Witness—Yes.
Petitioner’s step-brother said that some of the men Would get so drunk that they would have to stay the night. After hearing other evidence, Judge Smith said, that the case was: clearly established, and he granted a decree nisi.
