WIDOW’S COMPENSATION
JURY’S 'COMPROMISE VERDICT - (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, November 14. Judgment was entered to-day for plaintiff in the case in which the jury awarded Mrs. Rose May Blake £lO5O against Lawton John August, as the result of the death of her husband, following a collision at Petone. It was stated that the jury had made its award under the misapprehension that the insurance company would only pay up to £lOOO. Mr. Justice Reed said he was surprised that the jury, having found for plaintiff, had not awarded great damages. He laughed at counsel’s remark that an additional £5O was being awarded as a punishment. He said that no doubt it was a compromise verdict. Costs were fixed according to scale, and His Honor certified for the extra day of the trial at £l5/15/-, with wit-’ riesses’ expenses and disbursements at the interrogatory proceedings..
