A THIRD CONVICTION.

WELLINGTON, November 12

Arrested at noon to-day, George Frederick Loney, aged 38, was this afternoon fined £2OO by Mr Page, S.M., on a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said the accused had been carrying on business in a. substantial way. Betting books found on him contained approximately 150 and 100 entries respectively. They mostly related to bets on races which started at Christchurch on Saturday, the bets ranging from 5/- to £l.

' Mr Page: You have had two previous convictions for keeping a common gaming house, and the fine I will now have to impose will have to be fairly substantial.” Defendant was given until December 3 to find the money, the default being fixed at six months’ imprisonment.
