DRUG APPEAL DISMISSED

“INFLUENCE IN HIGH PLACES.” SYDNEY, October 13. Judgment was given yesterday in the Quarter Sessions Appeal Court by Judge Armstrong on the appeal by Kate Barry, 41, against her conviction by Mr. Perry, S.M., at the Central Police Court on August 1, on a charge of having had on July 1 a quantity of cocaine in her possession. She was sentenced at the lower Court to 12 months’ imprisonment, and in addition, was fined £250, in default 12 months’ imprisonment, tho second sentence to take effect from the expiration of the first sentence. At tho lower Court it was alleged that while the detectives were searching premises in Riley-street, where Barry had resided, a tin of cocaine had fallen from her clothing. Appellant, said that she was not a tenant of a house in Riley-street. She had not resided there Since she shot a man named Prendergast in self-de-fence.

His Honor, in dismissing the appeal, said that Barry was one of the basest ! creatures he had ever known. He was ■ going to stop her if he could. Mr. Dovey (for appellant) asked that the sentences should bo made concurrent.

Detective-Sergeant Wickham said he had known the appellant for about 15 years. She had been engaged in the drug traffic, of which she was one of the principal distributors in Sydney, for three or four years past. By the police she was regarded as a menace to society. She had been associated with several desperate criminals. To her influence were ascribed many of the underworld feuds. She was known as a professional witness and bailee. May Blake, 53, domestic, also appealed to Judge Armstrong against her conviction by Mr. Shepherd, S.M., at the Central Police Court on September 8, on a charge of having a quantity of cocaine in her possession. At the lower court she was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, and in addition was fined £250, in default 12 months’ imprisonment. His Honor eliminated the fine of £250, and its alternative of 12 months' imprisonment, but confirmed the senten co of 12 months.
