TOBACCO STOLEN

FROM RUGBY LEAGUE. SYDNEY. September 24. During the past three months the New South Wales Rugby League has received accounts from various city houses for tobacco and cigars, totalling £l2OO. An audit of the League’s stores disclosed that the goods had never been received, and detectives were called in to investigate. An amazing system of stealing was disclosed. The police discovered that a man who said lie spoke on behalf of the League had been sending substantia] orders to various warehouses for smokers’ requisites. On every occasion he informed the suppliers that an executive official of the organisation would call in person for the goods. Detectives allege that the man collected the tobacco, cigars, and cigarettes himself. He then conveyed the goods to the office of a Redfern business man, who purchased the stolen tobacco from him at half the invoice price. After extensive inquiries, DetectiveSergeant Mcßae and Detectives Latrobe, Mackie, and Neave arrested three men yesterday afternoon. One man was charged with stealing, and the other two with receiving stolen property. Further arrests may be made.
