RAILWAY FACILITY.

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir, —Will you grant me space to bring to the notice of the public the • unfair way in which the Railway Dec partment treats the Cobden-Rewanui f workers. The Railway Department > has been urged to arrange the stop- - ping of the workmen’s trains on the 1 Cohfden side of Cobden Bridge in - order to allow Cobden workers to I board and alight, but it has not done so. Here we have the spectacle of . weary workers walking in all , weathers half a mile parallel with the railway line in order to reach a > station or come therefrom, and, if the poor toiler,, who, perhaps, has shattered his health in Empire service, shrinking at the thought of that dreary walk, jumps from the moving train, he is prosecuted. The Railway Department has spent sums of money advertising the railways’ conveniences, sleeping berths and other advantages, but deeds are better advertising methods, so why are the railways not run to suit the public? Will

our two Labour members of Parliament kindly enquire if the Railways’ Department’s expenditure on luxurious appointments on passenger trains in other parts of New Zealand returns the same amount of profit that our Westland Railways do? If the ) railways are not paying, is it through i mismanagement in not complying - with the wishes of the public.—Yours, i etc., ■ BUSINESS IN GOVERNMENT. Cobden, October 2. 1
