LONDON PRESS ESTIMATES. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, October 1. Commenting on the death of Lord Birkenhead, “The Times” says: “The true valuation of his career r--’ its ideals will long be dl.\ , >mt no figure in his day was more real to the mass of his contemporai ics.” The “Daily Express” says: “To those who urge that lie made mistakes and had his feelings, we can answer ‘Yes,’ and ask *A\ ho is w itiiout them?’ At the same lime lie was a great fighter, a great patriot, a great Lord Chancellor, and a great Iriend. The “Morning Post.” while paying a tribute to his services to the State says: The wonder is not that he achieved so much, but that with such brilliant, talents and great, opportunities he had not achieved more. It is impossible to say that Ite Jias anywhere left a mark upon his age. The “Daily Herald” heading “Birkenhead His Own Worst Enemy,” publishes articles by Harold Laski, and says: No one over doubted his great intellectual power. He was tin admirable judge, brilliant, debater, and skilled negotiator, but had grave faults, both of character and temper. He enjoyed playing the part of a reckless adventurer.
The “Daily Telegraph” says: The Lord Chancellorship offered Birkenhead a chance which he took superbly, of leaving a great name to be admired by lawyers. It denied him the even superior prize, namely leadership of the Conservative party.
The late Earl’s body has been removed from his residence in Grosvenor Gardens to Grays Inn Chapel, where it will remain until the funeral on Saturday at Charlton near Banbury, where he had a country residence.
