CARGO OF TREASURES
PERSIAN ART EXHIBITS.
[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]
LONDON, September 30.
Somewhere in the Red Sea there is a mystery ship hurrying to Britain, carrying Persian treasures valued at nearly three millions sterling, for exhibition at the Royal Academy at the New Year. This ship is indeed an argosy of art, her cargo including jewel-encrusted swords, shields, and sceptres, some of the emeralds being as large as a man’s hand, from the Shah’s Crown jewels. There are also exquisite carpets, woven in gold, silver and silk from famous mosques, as well as priceless manuscripts, miniatures, and brocades which were transported from Teheran and the Persian Gulf by air to avoid the dangers of breakage by camel transport over the mountain passes.
Sir Denison Ross, one of the .organisers, says that the vessel’s name has not been revealed, owing to fears that pirates may waylay her.
