HOSPITAL BEDSTEADS

PURCHASE'IN ENGLAND. The decision of the Waikato Hospital Board to order bedsteads from England in preference to New Zealand manufactured articles was commented upon by Mr J. Findlay, secretary of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association. Mr Findlay said it was claimed by the New Zealand manufacturer concerned that the Dominion-made beds were identical with those made overseas, and the manufacturer would [ challenge anyone to distinguish between the two articles. The manufacturer had stated he had been supplying similar beds to the board for some time and that there had been no complaints. The beds had been designed .according to the instructions of a former superintendent of the hospital. The board, Mr Findlay said, had stated that in considering its ratepayers it had to purchase in the best market. In helping New Zealand manufacturers the board was surely acting in the interests of its ratepayers. The manufacturers did not ask to be given the business at a higher quotation, but desired an opportunity of tendering for the board’s requirements. The New Zealand beds, according to manufacturers’ investigations, were made of better' material, and any local manufacturer would be pleased to supply similar beds at the same price as the landed cost of the British article.
