OBITUARY

SIR H. L. SMITH DORRIEN

LONDON, August 12.

The death has ’occurred of General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith Dorrien.

Sir Horace Smith Dorrien was born *• on May 26, 1958 and was educated at Harrow. In 1876 he entered the 95th (Derby) Regiment, serving in the Zulu War of 1879, when he was mentioned in despatches. In 1882 he raised and commanded a Corps 6f Mounted Infantry in the Egyptian War, taking part in the Nile expedition of 1884 and the Soudan Campaign of the following

year. In 1886 he was awarded the D.S.O. for his services with the Soudan Frontier Field Force. He transferred his activities to India, serving in Bengal and the Punjab and taking part in the Chitral Relief Force of 1895. He was- also mentioned in despatches in the Tirah Campaign on the North West Frontier in 1897-8. Returning to Egypt he fought in the battle of Omdurman and went with Lord Kitchener t'o Fashoda. In 1899 he went to South Africa in command of a brigade and a division. He was thrice mentioned in despatches, and was promoted to the rank of Major-General. He served as an Adjutant-general in India for two years, afterwards takingcommand of the 4th Indian Division. In 1906, he was appointed a Lieut.-Gen-eral and he became a General in 1912. From 1907-12 he was Commander-in-Chief at Aidershot, and from 1912-14 he took the Southern Command. At the outbreak of the Great War he commanded first the 2nd Army Corps and then the 2nd Army dn the British Expeditionary Force. He was Comman-der-in-Chief of the East African Forces from 1915 to 1916. In 1918 he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar ajid held the Governorship till September 1923 -when he retired. He was a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and made G.C.M.G. 1
