GREY TECHNICAL SCHOOL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Greymouth. Technical High School was held last evening. Those present were Messrs. T. E. Coates (Chairman), F. B. Lawn, W. Parfitt, A. J. Fairmaid, J. B. Kent, C. K. Miller, W. Blair, Dr J. W. Mcßrearty and Mr. J. B. Hutton (Principal). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs F. Turley and J. Goodall. The Finance Committee presented their report, showing that the Board had a credit balance of £725 19s 2d. Accounts amounting to £B4B 2s 9d were passed for payment. Receipts for the month were £768 9s.

A letter was received from the Assistant Director of Education urging the pressing need for economy in view of ths circumstances in which the Dominion is situated. It was decided that the Board should reply, stating that it would endeavour to make economies. The Department of Technical Education wrote offering to make a garden at the hostel if the Board would pay 5 per cent, interest on the sum required. —lt was decided to allow the matter to stand over for the time being. Plans for the proposed additions were shown to the Board. The Principal said that as the plans were at present the girls’ bsaketball court would - be encroached on and the drainage

jjseheme upset. The Board decided to protest against the plans, it being the Board’s opinion that the additions should be made on the north side. A donation of £5 from the Incorporated Institute of Accountants for the purchase of new books on accountancy for the school library was received, with thanks. In reference to children going to Christchm ch, the Principal said he w-as not in favour of children from 14 to 17 years going away and not being under

the control of teachers. —It was decided to let the pupils go if they went with their preants, or if a letter was receired from the parents signifying their approval of the excursion. In reference to the Education. report, a summarised version of which had been given to each member, it was decided to write and congratulate the Minister of Education on the report. Dr. J. W. Mcßrearty and Mr. F. B. Lawn were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
