CHRISTCHURCH, July 25
The market for potatoes is still very weak. The Kaitio is due to sail from Lyttelton to-morrow night, and it is expected that she will take between 2000 and 3000 sacks to Auckland, a-great deal less than had been anticipated earlier. The Wingatui is scheduled to sail from Timaru tomorrow, and estimates are from 5000 sacks to 0000 sacks. In any case, it will be the largest shipment to leave Timaru over a long period. For the Katoa, values were considerably firmer than the ruling prompt quote, and sales were made at £4/15/- to £5. To-day, forward quotations are £4/12/6 a ton f.o.b.s.i. for July’s, £5/2/6 for Augusts and £5/5/- for September. The rule the farmer is adopting is that of a. holder, and to day with values so low he remains firmly in that position. The nominal value to farmers is £3/10/- to £3/15/on trucks, compared with £6/15/- during the corresponding week last year. Oats are also very quiet. Locally, however, the position is still firm, and B gartons have been sold this week for Lyttelton shipment at 4/t'.o.b. S.I. and A gartons at 4/1. The Southern quotations to-day are 3/SA to 3/9 f.o.b. S.I. for B gartons and 3/91 to 3/10 for A gartofis. The chaff market is quiet. There is little offering and little enquiry. From Auckland, the enquiry is small, as Tasmanian consignments hold the markets there, and more are expected next month. Sales for prompt delivery have been made at £6/17/6 a ton f.o.b.s.i. equivalent to £5/7/6 on trucks. Chaff for later delivery is not offering in any quantity and the enquiry is dull. The onion market is practically a spent force but a few order's are being sent from outside ports. The duty which has just been placed in foreign onions lias had a firming effect on tho market and up to £4 on trucks lias been paid tins week for quality linqs. A little business is being done in tho new season’s wheat 5/5 to 5/6 a bushel for Tuscan, according to stations.
Fowl wheat is a shade firmer with the enquiry fair. To-day’s quote is 6/- to 6/- f.o.b. S.I. SALE OF FRIESIANS. INVERCARGILL, July 24. A clearing sale of Mr T. R. Eade’s Friesians proved successful. One hundred and twenty-two head were offered and all were sold. The top prices were 105 guineas for the principal herd sire, bought for Victoria,' and 65 guineas for a, herd dam. The average price was about £3O. Several purchases were made for northern buyers.
