OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT.
“Words and Music,” an elaborate Fox Movietone musical Revue, will be presented this evening. It is a musical comedy with a collegiate background and introduces Lois Moran in her first singing, talking and dancing role on the audible screen. Tom Patricola, America’s premier eccentric dancer, is featured in the picture.
' “Embarrassing Moments” is the other star picture, in which the leader is Reginald Denny, who has done everything from prize-fighting to hunting mountain lions. Born in England of theatrical parents, he took to the stage at an early age. When his company laid off, he took a fling at prizefighting to earn money, having considerable training by a famous English sportsman. He once was stranded in India while touring Asia with an opera company. Even after' he had made an assured place in films, adventure kept dogging him.’ On one occasion his aeroplane “cracked up." Denny has one of his most amusing roles in “Embarrassing Moments." Short talkies featuring “The Collegians” and Amy Johnson’s arrival at Brisbane will also be presented. “The Rough Riders” will be presented at Sunday night’s picture'benefit. MONDAY. George Bancroft’s left wrist bears a mark that it will carry for some time. A steel handcuff left it. For most of two nights during the filming of “Thunderbolt,” his second Paramount talking picture, which is to be presented on Monday and Tuesday next, Bancroft was ironed to the player who portrayed a prison (guard. He was forced to tug and haul with his manacled wrist while he dragged his guard several yards. Bancroft’s role is that of an intrepid but lawless individual whose, battle with societj’ finally leads him to a death cell. ’LtftSL MAWHERA DANCE. Help the Marist football team tonight. The great mysterious Frog Dance will be introduced at the Mawhera Daiice, to be held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Special prizes will be awarded the winners of this dance.
CHRISTCHURCH WINTER SHOW.
A meeting of teachers was held yesterday afternoon at the Grey Main School to consider the proposed excursion to the Christchurch Winter Show next month. There were present: Messrs Lorking (Grey Main), Lorimer (Runanga), Davis (Technical), Barrett, Edwards (Cobden) and Bro. Tarcisius (Marist).
Mr E. M. Marriner (organiser) addressed the meeting briefly, and on behalf of the Show Committee extended an invitation to West Coast pupils, both public, private and secondary, to visit the show next month. Chilren needing accommodation would be billetted with Christchurch people during their stay. It was proposed to run an excursion to Christchurch on Thursday, August 21, returning on the following Saturday. Several questions in connection with both the show and the excursion were asked and answered, and several suggestions made by the teachers present were noted by the organiser. Mr H. R. Barrett, of Cobden Scohol, was elected secretary and organiser’ for this district, and teachers desiring information'are requested to apply to him.
