VANCOUVER, July 25
According to a message from Hamilton, Ontario, where the Empire Games are shortly to begin, practically all of the New Zealand and Australian athletes have got down to work there. They express the greatest satisfaction with the comfort of their quarters. The New Zealand scullers are fraternising with members of the local Leander Club with whom they will train. The arrival of the Australians and New Zealanders has renewed enthusiasm and interest in the Games. The four and eight-oared shells for the New Zealand scullers have arrived as well as Pearce, the Australian, to-day. The- New Zealand coxswain. A. E. Eastwood, who has been ill. is now out of the hospital.
GOLF. WELLINGTON, July 26. Alterations have been made in the programme of the golf championships. It has been decided that 68 amateurs can play in the open championship instead of 64, together with 20 professionals. The semi-finals of the professionals’ championship will be played on the Wednesda5 r , and the final on Friday. The prize money in this event will be £4O, £25, £l5 and £l5. BOXING. HAWERA, July 26. In a professional boxing contest, 10 rounds at Patea, last evening Jack Jones (9.12), defeated Jack Crowley (9.5) on points. Jones took the place of Glen Leslie, who was originally matched with Crowley, but was unable to fulfil the engagement owing to a hand injury. Jones won six rounds comfortably though fully extended in flashes by the vigorous attacks of Crowley, who won points in two, and could be credited with a. draw in the two other rounds. Jones had his opponent groggy in the final session, but declined to deliver the knockout. SCULLING. , LONDON, July 25. Ted Phelps had only two and a-half lengths to spare in winning the ancient Diggetts Coast sculls race for apprentice watermen, . from London Bridge to Chelsea. A. Simmonds, a 20-years-old apprentice, was five seconds behind at the finish.
