LEAGUE FOOTBALL

— — IPSWICH ‘DEFEAT N.Z. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] IPSWICH, July 23. The Ipswich District Rugby League team met and defeated the New Zealand League team at Ispwich to-day by ten points to three. The. New Zealanders were somewhat sluggish in their form, but despite the scores they gave a better display of football than they did against Queensland on Saturday last. This was Ipswich’s fifths victory in the seven matches it has played against All Black teams.

The weather was fine and the ground ,iard. The attendance was poor. The teams were as follow: —

New Zealand:—Backs: Dufty, Abbott, Littleton. Pearse, Meyer, Seagar and Dodds. Forwards: Calder, Stephenson, Clark, Griffiths, Timms and Eckhoff.

Ipswich:—Backs: Smith, Wallis, Rollo, Chigley, Porter, Donnar and Gee; forwards: Doyle, Dempsey, Fraser. Thornton, Molloney and Bennett. The first twenty minutes’ play was without any score, and during this part of the game the visitors threw the ball about, in great style, but they encountered a stubborn opposition. Ipswich opened their scoring account. with a penalty goal, kicked by Porter. —Ipswich 2; New Zealand 0. Shortly after this Ipswich, who still were continuing to attack increased its tally. Bennett secured and he scored a good try, which Porter converted. —Ipswich 8; New Zealand 0. The home team kept up the pressure, and Thornton, from a scrum near the line, hurled himself across the line to register a second try. Porter, however, failed to add the major points. The half-time score therefore was:—lpswich 10; Now Zealand 0.

In the second half, the play was more even. Stephenson, as “rake,” continued to give the visitors a feast of the ball, but there was little understanding among the New Zealand backs. As in Saturday’s match at Brisbane, cohesive movements among the backs were lacking. x However, ten minutes before full time, the New Zealand backs did combine in a fine rush right from the 50 yard mark. The ball went out to Abbott, who with a clear field ahead, ran and touched down with supports handy. Dufty, however, missed the kick. Although Dufty also had failed with three penalty kicks during the earlier stages of the match, the big New Zealander, whose third, match this one has been against Ipswich, was a tower of strength to his side. His kicking for gaps in the field was extremely effective. The New Zealand forwards worked hard. Eckhoff again played a dashing game.
