Mrs Fordic, of Cobden who has been seriously ill with pneumonia, is now progressing satisfactorily. Mr W. Greenslade, of Christchurch, arrived last evening on a visit to his brother, Mr J. W. Greenslade. Mrs. E. Cressey, senr., who has been an inmate of the Grey Hospital, returned home to-day. , The-death occurred at Auckland yesterday of Mr Robert Hooker, who was for many years a resident of Brunner. Mr J. Platts-Mills, New Zealand Rhodes scholar, passed in jurisprudence, with first-class honours, at Oxford (stated a London cablegram). Recent arrivals at the Albion Hotel include: Messrs A. Manson, L. J. Wilkins, C. G. Mahan, A. M. Hollander, N. L Scholfleld (Christchurch), Miss Wilkinson (Chicago). The death is announced from London of Mr Clifford Seyler, stage author. His widow 1 says that the obsolescence. of the synchronised films, for which he wrote, rendered his work worthless. At last night’s meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby League the President, Mr J. D. Wingham, spoke of the loss the code had sustained in the death of Mr John Vaughan. It was decided to send a letter of condolence to the relatives, and members stood for a moment as a mark of respect. Among.the passengers who arrived from Christchurch by yesterday’s express were Dr.. T. Fletcher Telford (Medical Officer of Health), Miss M. L. Cunliffe, Miss Miss, T. Merfield, Miss Crowley, Messrs W. J. Mcllroy (senr.), J. D. Lynch, C. Hall, J. Haisty, J. Slattery, .J, Jack, P. McCormick, and W. McFarlane. 'lt is ’ officially announced that His Majesty the King has accepted the resignation of the Rt. Rev. J. R. Har--7 mer, D.D,*lolst Bishop of Rochester. Prior to assuming control of the ancient Kentish see, in 1905, Dr Harmer, who is now 73 years of age, was for ten years Bishop of Adelaide, South Australia. Mr W. E., Carter, who has been mail agent on the Aorangi and Niagara for years, has received notice of his promotion to be supervisor of the registration branch of the General Post Office, Wellington. Mr "Carter’s position will be filled by Mr A. MeRory, who is at present supervisor at the Frankton Junction Railway Post Office. Guests at Revington’s Hotel, include: —Misses Crowley (2), Mr and 1 Mrs W. J. Meyer, Dr T. Fletcher Telford, Messrs B. Brownlie, A. T. Sellars, A. E. H. Christie (Christchurch), G. A. Dargaville, A. Thompson (Wellington), W. Souter, B. A. Murphy (Auckland). The Greymouth drapers gathered today to mpke a presentation to Mr A. S L. Armstrong; in commemoration 1 of his golden wedding. The presents- • tion, ,a tray with teapot, milk, jug and j sugar basin, was made by Mr P. : Peters,, who spdke of the esteem in : wh’ch Mr Armstrong is held by the trade. Others' spoke similarly, expressing to Mr and Mrs Armstrong their best wishes. Mr Armstrong suitably replied.
The death occurred at the Grey Hospital this morning of Mr John Booth, who had been an inmate since May 29.. ,He was single, aged 72 yeafs, and had been a member of . the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union. The flag was half-masted on the wharf shelter-shed to-day. The funeral will leave St. Patrick’s Church at 9.30 a.m. to-morrow, for Karoro Cemetery. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m.
